If you’ve got an old SMI blow molding machine on your floor, you know the feeling. Over the years, they just… slow down. You start noticing the preform heating isn’t quite right, or your cycle times are creeping up, and suddenly you’ve got a bottleneck that’s killing your day. Usually, the culprit is the infrared (IR) lamps. They just wear out. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to rip out the whole oven. Swapping those tired old tubes for modern, high-density ones is a quick way to get your productivity back. Let’s talk about the heat. Old lamps lose their punch. We swap them out for short-wave quartz halogen tubes that fit your specific voltage and wattage. When you have more wattage per centimeter, the preform hits that blowing temperature a lot faster. That means you can potentially shave time off the oven dwell. But—and this is a big but—**check your power supply first.**If you try to push too much power through an old transformer that wasn’t built for it, you’re going to fry your circuitry. Not a fun day for anyone. The nitty-gritty on the gear. We use heavy-wall quartz glass because it can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. We also stick to R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because a loose fit at the socket creates resistance. resistance leads to heat, and heat leads to melted wiring. We also tend to use coated quartz. It pushes the heat forward into the PET preform instead of letting it leak back into the oven housing. It’s just a smarter way to use the energy. What happens when you actually install them? The best part is that these are drop-in replacements. You don’t need to rebuild your machine frame or do any crazy engineering. But remember: more heat changes the whole vibe of the oven. You’ll probably need to tweak your cooling fans. If you don’t, you might end up with “hot spots” in the center of the preform. If your cooling system is clogged or just too weak, that extra heat will actually deform the plastic. It’s all about the balance. Get the heat input and the airflow working together, and you’ll hit those target cycle speeds again.
