
Why we put our bathroom lamps through “the torture chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got freezing cold air one minute and a thick, steamy fog the next. For an infrared lamp, it’s a constant battle. The quartz glass and the electrical parts are basically under attack from moisture and heat every single time someone takes a shower. We could just cross our fingers and hope the seals work. But that’s not how we do things. Instead, we put every batch through damp-heat aging tests. We basically try to break them on purpose before they ever reach your warehouse.
The battle against steam
Water vapor and high voltage don’t get along. Period. Usually, the weak spot is right where the electrodes meet the quartz tube. If that seal is off by even a tiny fraction of a millimeter, steam sneaks in. Once that happens, the tungsten filament oxidizes or the terminals short out. It’s a quick trip to the scrap heap. To stop this, we lock these lamps in high-humidity chambers for hundreds of hours. We’re talking 40°C with 95% humidity. If a lamp can’t survive that without its insulation failing, it has no business being in a real bathroom.
The tricky part: Breathing vs. Blocking
Here’s the thing: you can’t just slap a bunch of heavy waterproof coatings on everything. If you overdo the insulation, you trap the heat inside the fixture. That leads to warped plastic or the thermal cutoff tripping. It’s a balancing act. We spend a lot of time tweaking the seal density so it blocks the water but still lets the fixture breathe. And a quick tip for the install: make sure your ventilation is on point. Even the best waterproof lamp will burn out early if the fixture is totally airtight and traps all that heat around the socket.
