
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared lamp in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with steam and splashes. You can’t just throw it in a basic plastic box and hope for the best. If you want to make sure nobody gets a shock, you have to obsess over one specific spot: where the power wire actually hits the quartz glass. Dealing with the damp Here’s the thing about water vapor—it finds every single tiny gap. If that moisture sneaks in and touches the live terminals, you’re looking at a short circuit or a ground fault. To stop that, we use IP-rated sealed boxes and a bit of specialized potting compound at the connection points. It’s all about keeping the live current far away from the outer shell. And do yourself a favor: use silicone gaskets. They won’t crumble or melt when things get hot. Wiring and grounding You really want a double-insulated setup here. I always suggest wiring with high-temp fluoropolymer or silicone jackets. Why? Because standard insulation can crack under the heat. In a damp bathroom, a tiny crack is basically an open door for a disaster. And please, make sure the chassis is bonded to a dedicated earth ground. That way, if something does leak, your breaker trips instantly. It’s a lot better than the outer shell of the heater becoming live. The heat vs. water struggle Now, there’s a catch. Tight seals are amazing for keeping water out, but they’re great at trapping heat, too. If you seal the lamp too tight, the inside gets scorching, which fries your wiring or kills the lamp early. It’s a balancing act. You need a seal that keeps the water out but still gives the heat a way to escape—maybe through a ventilated heat sink or a thermal relief path. One last check Before you flip the switch, double-check your seals. One pinched gasket is all it takes to ruin your insulation. Grab a megohmmeter and test the resistance between the live terminal and the ground. If the reading isn’t high, leave the power off. Better to spend an extra five minutes checking now than to deal with a blowout later.
