Making IR Lamps That Actually Fit Your PET Machine
If you’ve spent any time on a plant floor, you know the headache of PET blow molding. Most machines use shortwave IR lamps to soften the preforms, but there’s a catch: the manufacturers love their proprietary parts. It feels like you’re locked into one supplier just because of a weird connector or a slightly off-size tube. We got tired of that. So, we built our lamps to be simple drop-in replacements. They work with about 95% of the equipment out there because we stopped overcomplicating things and focused on what actually matters: the power, the size, and the light. Let’s talk power. Industrial ovens are brutal on hardware. Whether you’re running 220V or 400V, the wattage has to be a perfect match for your transformer. If it’s off, you’re just asking for a burnt-out filament. Now, cranking up the wattage does speed up your heating cycle, which is great for production. But be careful. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, that extra heat can actually warp your reflector housing. It’s a balancing act. The nitty-gritty stuff We use high-purity quartz glass and a halogen gas fill. Why? Because it stops tungsten from gunking up the inside of the tube. This keeps the light clear and strong for thousands of hours instead of dimming out after a few weeks. As for the ends, we stick to R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re the gold standard for a reason. You just plug them in. No hacking, no modifying sockets, no swearing at the machine for three hours. Getting the heat right PET is picky. If the wavelength is wrong, you either get uneven heating or—even worse—you scorch the plastic. We tuned our lamps to hit that shortwave sweet spot, so the heat penetrates the preform evenly from the outside in. We also keep the dimensions tight. These lamps slide into narrow oven racks without rattling. That’s huge, because when a machine is vibrating at high speeds, any “wiggle room” usually leads to a broken lamp. One last tip: keep your reflectors polished. Even the best lamp in the world can’t do its job if it’s staring into a mirror covered in grime. Give them a scrub, and you’ll see the difference immediately.
